It had only been hours since Matty Fry’s body had been found, and yet the mood in the police station was already celebratory. There was a general feeling that a weight had been lifted and that all those deaths had been avenged, including that of DCI Betts.

A memorial wall had been set up in the office, where colleagues had written notes and pinned them around the most recent photo of her, all trying to pay their respects. It came with the sad reminder that even with the Self Killer out of commission, it wasn’t going to bring Betts back.

Leah and Jonesy hadn’t spoken a word since leaving the bedsit. Once, he would have taken the death as a positive sign. But enough time spent with his partner and lover had told him there was more to the case. He used to enjoy that drive to read between the lines, feeling that it was pushing him to become a better copper. But today, he resented her for taking away that sense of peace he got from closing a case.

The semi-celebratory atmosphere was interrupted by a new arrival, one that nobody recognised.

It was a well-dressed man in his late forties who seemed to pride himself in his appearance, not a single hair out of place. “Top brass,” Leah observed as he came into view.

He was flanked by two officers, one on either side, both of whom looked around at the desk spaces and the officers that occupied them with nervous faces. One of them was carrying a small cardboard box.

The man stopped short of Betts’ office and cleared his throat. “Good afternoon, everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Detective Chief Inspector Neil Wilkins. I hope to be getting to know all of you over the next few days, as I will be taking over from DCI Betts.”

At the mention of her name, Wilkins looked towards the memorial and steadied himself. “I recognise I’m coming to you all at a difficult time. I knew Kim well. We came up through training together. I knew that she was a decent woman, and underneath her harsh surface, she always had time for anyone under her command. I had hoped that she might make it to retirement. But I was wrong.” He steadied himself. “This is still a great force. It’s still a pillar of the Bedford community. And I know a lot of that was because of Kim’s tireless work. I’m not about to let any of that go to waste, are you?”

There were a few murmurs and shaking of heads.

“Good, then hopefully, with the Self Killer taken care of, we can look at moving forward.”

He nodded and disappeared into Betts’—or rather his—office. The officer carrying the box accompanied him into the office.

Leah immediately started after him, crossing the room and leaving Jonesy in her wake. She knocked on the door. “Come in,” came the call. She entered the office where Wilkins was about to start unloading a box of personal belongings.
